LG Display slams Samsung with patent lawsuit

GadgetHerald.com: LCD panel maker LG Display Co. has stated it has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against its rival Samsung Electronics Co.. The lawsuit has been filed in the South Korean civil court on the issue of the use of advanced OLED displays in smartphones and tablet PCs.

In the lawsuit, LG has alleged that Samsung has infringed seven patents on the design of OLED panels, device design and driver circuitry. On September 27, 2012,LG said that it would seek damages as well as a permanent injunction against the sale of Samsung’s devices in South Korea for infringement in Samsung’s latest smartphone, the Galaxy S III, the Galaxy Tab 7.7 tablet computer and Galaxy Note phone-cum-tablet.

The displays which used the OLED, also known as the organic light emitting diodes, had first emerged in car radios in the 90s. In the recent years the quality has improved enough to be used in the mobile phones, tablet computers and TVs.

LG display said, “This lawsuit has been filed both to enforce LG Display’s intellectual property rights and promote fair competition”.
Samsung issued a statement which said that it has more OLED elated patents than LG. Samsung also said that it will review the lawsuit and consider legal action if needed.
