Apple iOS 6.1 hack gaining popularity online

There is a new iOS 6 hack that has been doing the rounds on the internet, allowing users to hijack a an iPhone and listen in to voice messages and make calls. There is also a YouTube video detailing the process of hacking into an iPhone 5 that is running iOS 6.1 online. Although the YouTube user urges people not to ‘do evil’, there is a lot one could do to exploit this vulnerability.

According to sources, Apple say that they are aware of the security flaw and will need to put out a software updated to patch the vulnerability. If one is to attempt the hack on an iPhone 5 running iOS 6.1, they would need to be able to carry out a set of instructions given on the user’s YouTube page. The process involves getting the phone into an ’emergency call’ state and then pressing the power button in a particular way.

Although the hack has been out for a while, it is only now that people have been catching on to the trick. The demonstration on the YouTube page was done with a simple form of a passcode, but even more complex passcodes can be broken into via the hack.

It remains to be seen when Apple will decide to release the update, as there is no fix currently available for the hack.
