Microsoft unveils retail pricing of Windows 8.1

US-based software manufacturing giant Microsoft is all set to reveal more details on the release of Widows 8.1 in October 2013, as well as a break from tradition on upgrades from the previous versions of the operating system. Windows 8.1 will be going on sale this fall and users who are not yet familiar with what 8.1 has to offer will have to invest some money and time to make a smooth transition.

Windows 8.1 will be priced at $119.99 for the base version and $199.99 for the pro version at retail and both of these versions are expected to go on sale in the US on October 17, 2013. However, the current Windows 8 version users will be able to download the update free of charge. In the past, the boxed and downloadable upgrade versions enabled users to upgrade from previous versions at lower prices.

The new change will allow more flexibility for customers in particular technical scenarios and this will be in response to the feedback which was received by the company. Microsoft also announced the availability of Windows 8.1 in a separate blog post.

On the other hand, the XP and Vista users should not be worried as they are not completely left out, as they can buy the DVD instead of using the download and boot from the DVD in order to install Windows 8.1.
