Microsoft starts Windows 8.1 pre-orders

US-based software manufacturing giant Microsoft announced that it is all set to open pre-orders for Windows 8.1, before the operating system has its official debut on October 18, 2013. The company confirmed that the upgrade will be free for Windows 8 users, but other users can place their orders now for the latest operating system, which will be available in less than three weeks.

The update will be officially launched by the end of October 2013 and it is designed in a way to make it easier for people to get used to the completely new interface which was made available with Windows 8. On October 17, 2013 the software giant will automatically update Windows 8 machines, just one day before the Windows 8.1 has its debut.

For now, Windows 7 users are able to pay $120 to order the Windows 8.1 upgrade DVD or a digital download. However, the company on the Windows 8.1 pre-order page has warned, “Windows 8.1 is not designed for installation on devices running Windows XP or Windows Vista”. Customers can even opt to buy Windows 8 and then get the free update to 8.1 later on.

The Windows 8.1 Pro will be priced at $199 and the price is set for the full version of the operating system and not just upgrades.
