Apple’s market share in China increases during third quarter

US-based tech giant Apple managed to claim fifth spot in the smartphone market in China during the third quarter of 2013. With the recent achievement, the company has surpassed ZTE Corp. and Xiaomi Corp., after it decided to include China in the latest iPhone’s international debut.

Shipments of the company’s iPhone increased 32 percent year-on-year and Apple managed to take 6 percent of the smartphone market in the country in the three months that ended in September 2013. Nicole Peng, the China research director for Canalys in a phone interview said that Apple had ranked seventh and had a 5 percent share in the second quarter of 2013.

Peng added, “In the third quarter, Apple was able to move up in China helped by the fact that the market was part of the first wave of the new iPhone launch”. The research director also said that the impact the company made was big and that helped them in gaining market share and also move up in the rankings.

Meanwhile, Huawei Technologies maintained its fourth position with a 9 percent market share as the shipments increased to 65 percent. On the other hand, the market share of ZTE was reduced by half to 5 percent, from ten percent earlier in 2013, as the company experienced a difficult time in the product transitional period.
