Electronics giant Sony has unveiled a spacious lab at Abertay University in Dundee, in an attempt to help teach game designers of the future. The new facility by Sony is the biggest of its kind in Europe and provides students with exactly the same development kit as professional games studios.
The lab will feature set-ups for creating games on the PlayStation Vita console, in addition to the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 machines. Dr. Maria Stukoff, the head of academic development at Sony Computer Entertainment Europe said, “The next generation of PlayStation-savvy developers are now in education and Abertay University is at the forefront of bringing young and talented developers to our platform.”
She went on to say that these students will be able to influence the future of video games and that they are happy to work with Abertay University in order to turn the lab into a PlayStation training hub. All undergraduate students at the university will participate in a major third-year project to build a game and they will be given an opportunity to work with professional mentors. Designers, students artists, programmers and audio engineers will be teaming up, as if they were running a small business.
At the PlayStation lab, two teams consisting of 22 people in each team have been working with FuturLab co-founders James Marsden and Kirsty Rigden.
