Plex to shut down its Cloud service

Software provider Plex has decided to shut down its cloud server due to its ongoing technical difficulties. The announcement about the shutdown was made by the company. This might be a disappointing news for some of the users who have frequently requested for a cloud option. This also enabled the subscribers to use a cloud storage account filled with content instead of the local drive.

However, the news does not come as a surprise. In February Plex had disabled the ability to create new servers for any of the Cloud users. The decision was made due to the ongoing work which included performance and quality trouble. The company in its recent update explained, “We hold ourselves to a high standard, and unfortunately, after a lot of investigation and thought, we haven’t found a solution capable of delivering a truly first class Plex experience to Plex Cloud users at a reasonable cost. While we are super bummed about the impact this will have on our happy Cloud users, ending support for it will allow us to focus on improving core functionality, adding new features and content, and delivering on our mission to provide a world-class product that we can all rely on and enjoy.”

The Plex Cloud was available only for the Pass customers and was originally launched with just Amazon Drive support. Gradually the Google Drive, Dropbox and OneDrive were added. At the same time the other Plex features will remain intact and anyone can create their own server with the help of video and audio content that is saved on a local drive like the NAS device or the external HDD/SSD.

The company has recommended the users to download their cloud content and store it locally on an NAS device and also run a data centre hosted VRS server. The users of Plex can look forward to the community forums for more information.
