Huawei announces a minor increase in new 5G customer base

Chinese telecommunications equipment company Huawei Technologies have made an announcement on December 18, 2018. The company said that it has secured more than 25 commercial contracts for 5G which is slightly above the 22, Huawei had announced in November 2018. Huawei Technologies has shipped more than 10,000 base stations for the fifth generation of mobile communications. The announcement was made by rotating chairman Ken Hu to the reporters at the company’s campus in Dongguan in southern China.

At the same time the company has not given any information about the customers. The press conference came a couple of weeks after Chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou, of Huawei was arrested in Canada at the request of the United States. Wanzhou is also the daughter of its fonder Ren Zhengfei. The financial officer might have to face an extradition to the United States in a case that has become a serious issue in the United States.

The recent incident has added to the troubles of Huawei Technologies which is already locked out of the US and has been prohibited by Australia and New Zealand from building 5G networks due to the concerns that its gear can facilitate Chinese spying. At the same time the company has constantly been explaining that Beijing does not have any influence on and was also a point that it has stressed at the press conference. The company at the press conference also clarified that it has been communicating with the governments across the globe about the independence of its operation.

A leading daily had last week quoted sources saying that Huawei has planned to spend $2 billion to address the concerns of British Authorities in terms of security. Britain is one of the biggest markets for Huawei. The company is one of the largest suppliers of telecommunication network equipment and the second biggest maker of smartphones with a revenue of about $92 billion in 2017.
