Samsung phone users complain of not being able to delete Facebook app

Pacific northwest based photographer Nick Winke, was going through internet forums when he came across a complaint that left him aghast. On some of the smartphones by Samsung Electronics, the users are now allowed to delete the Facebook app. Winke had purchased the Samsung Galaxy S8 Android based device and comes with the Facebook app already installed in it when it was introduced in 2017.

The photographer had used the Facebook app to connect with some of his old friends on the social network and also shared pictures of the natural landscapes and his Siamese cat but he did not want to stick with the device. Winke tried to get rid of the app from his phone but the conversation on the forums proved to be true and it could not be deleted. Just one option could be found and that was to ‘disable’ it and he was not sure what it meant.

Winke in an interview said, “It just absolutely baffles me that if I wanted to completely get rid of Facebook that it essentially would still be on my phone, which brings up more questions. Can they still track your information, your location, or whatever else they do? We the consumer should have say in what we want and don’t want on our products.” Consumers in recent times have become more aware ab0ut their digital rights and have also become more vigilant about their privacy too.

This has happened after revelations about information sharing practices by Facebook, the regulators have heightened the scrutiny of online data collection. There are also people who have deleted their Facebook accounts in protest of the lapse on the side of the company. Many of the Android users have started questioning Samsung’s deal to sell phones with a permanent version of Facebook app and many of them are complaining on the social media. Meanwhile the Facebook spokesperson says that the disabled version of the app works as it has been deleted.
