Sony stops producing PlayStation Vita

Production of the handset console by Sony, the PlayStation Vita has officially been stopped. The eight year old device was the successor to the popular PlayStation Portable but had just sold an estimated 16 million units during its lifespan when compared to the PSP’s 76 million over nine years. The device could not perform well at the console market, may be due to the rise of mobile gaming on smartphones and tablets which had taken off at the same time when the Vita was released.

It cannot be forgotten that the Vita had some interesting features including the OLED touch screen and a rear touch pad that had later found its way on the front of the DualShock 4 controller for the PlayStation 4. Moreover, it was also able to control and display the PS4 games through its Remote Play Function which was similar to what was seen on the Nintendo’s Wii U that was released later in that year.

The strangest thing is that games are still being made for the Vita but according to a few reports, that too will come to end on March 31, 2019. The library of the Vita had featured some of the remarkable titles like the Wipeout 2048, Tearaway, Uncharted: Golden Abyss and Gravity Rush. But there is a good news for the players without Vitas that many of these games would be ported to the main PlayStation consoles.

Sony has assured that it is planning to make a successor to Vita considering that Nintendo Switch occupies a similar space as a high-fidelity portable gaming experience. It has already sold more than the Vita did in two years. The figure does not come as a surprise as they are reluctant to try and recapture this part of the market. There are still some gamers who might be interested in buying the last Vitas in the market.
