New Samsung patent shows phone with a wraparound display

A new patent has been spotted by the Dutch technology site LetsGoDigital and it has indicated that Samsung could be working on a smartphone with a wraparound display that continues over the edges of the phone and on to the rear of the device as well. The patent in question has been titled Electronic Device Having Plurality of Display and Method for Controlling Same and has suggested a handset with a screen that can be viewed from both the sides.

This can assist immeasurably when it comes to photographing friends and while taking a selfie. The patent application has mentioned that Samsung describes the device with a device configured to include a first surface in a first direction, a second surface in a second direction opposite to the first direction and a third surface enclosing at least a portion of the space formed between the first surface and the second surface.

The third surface described consists of the small area of the display that curves over the edge of the handset. Some of the drawings found online of the patent application give an idea of what Samsung is going for with the proposed device. However, the idea of a display that curves around the rear of the device is not necessarily a new one as Huawei’s foldable device Mate X offers a similar functionality for selfie and taking a picture while Samsung’s own Galaxy Fold makes use of a secondary outer screen and not a single curved one. It also allows for friends to see themselves while their photos are being taken.

For now it is not clear of the proposed design in the patent will make its way in too an actual commercial device but there are reports that the next Samsung Galaxy Fold could fold twice over. Smartphone segment is going through a massive change in terms of the foldable technology with more and more companies trying to come up with their unique designs.
