Facebook continues to plan for ads on its WhatsApp

Facebook had earlier announced that it will be introducing ads to its Status like found in Stories. But then in 2018 it was reported that the WhatsApp advertising plans by the social networking giant. But it was in January 2020, when reports said that it has abandoned its plans to bring advertising to Status which is similar to its Stories. But the fact is that the social network has not abandoned its plans to put ads to WhatsApp. Plans are being made towards the project and will be done when it manages to unify its messaging apps.

A spokesperson from Facebook said that the ads in status is a long-term opportunity for WhatsApp. A few reports have also mentioned about how Facebook is about to implement the target advertising on the encrypted messaging application. The reports add that the company might use the phone numbers that would be useful to match the Facebook and WhatsApp accounts that will help to decide which ads have to be shown.

While this looks promising, the plan has already become controversial among the critics and within the company. Some of the executives have expressed that there are high chances that if this is applied then many of the users would go ahead and delete their Facebook accounts. Another cause of concern is the anti-trust investigations that are going on to scrutinize the companies.

Whatever the case may, be it does not seem that the ads would come anytime soon to WhatsApp. Facebook has earlier clarified that it is going to take many years for it to merge its messaging infrastructure across its applications. WhatsApp might take its time to implement the major projects. Meanwhile, WhatsApp continues to have a huge active user base and its Stories feature is popular among its users. The company in recent times has also implemented a few measures to deal with passing on wrong information through messages.
