Microsoft to shut down Internet Explorer in August 2021

Software giant Microsoft has confirmed that it is all set to end support for its once popular Internet Explorer on August 17, 2020. It was also added that from the end of November 2020, the Microsoft Teams web app will also not be supported on the web browser. While the rest of the Microsoft 365 apps and service will take back support from the browser by summer 2021. After the dates that have mentioned above have passed, the users, who continue to use the browser will experience a degraded service when they are using the apps or might not be able to connect to the internet completely.

The Internet Explorer was launched in 1995 and soon it became the most used and the most popular browser on the web. It had a usage share of about 95 percent by 2003. As years passed, a number of companies came up with their own browsers with improved or better user experience, which made Internet Explorer less popular every day.

The end of Internet Explorer was planned much earlier. Its popularity started to decline with the launch of the browser Mozilla Firefox in 2004 and off-course the Google Chrome in 2008. It was in 2015, when the company announced that Microsoft Edge will be replacing the browser. Then in 2016, Internet Explorer was no longer the most popular browser in the market as Google Chrome had managed to take the top spot. The old version of the Edge will be taken back on March 9, 2021 and will thus make way for the latest version that is based on the Chromium software.

This also means that the users will be able to have their hands on more features and those include the ones meant for Google Chrome. For those who would miss the Internet Explorer, the Edge will have an Internet Explorer mode that will allow access to the legacy apps to the businesses who have invested in it.
