Facebook aims to bring voice and video calling to main app

Social networking giant Facebook is allowing some of its users to make voice as well as video calls in its main app. Only some of the users are able to do this on a trial basis and is being done to make it easier for the users to make calls without the need of opening its standalone Messenger app. Facebook had separated the Messenger from the main app years ago. This means that the users had to download a separate app to send messages and make calls.

The social network has been trying to bring together the messages across the number of its apps and made its first attempt between Messenger and Instagram in September 2020. The change had allowed the users of each service to have messaging and video calls with its contacts on the other without the need of downloading each of the apps. Facebook eventually plans to integrate WhatsApp in the mix. Meanwhile, the spokesperson at Facebook on August 23, 2021 said that the users will have to continue using the messenger to have a full-featured messaging, video and audio call experience.

Meanwhile, Facebook is also working towards its virtual reality remote work app and launched a test of the app last week. With the recent change, the users of the Oculus Quest 2 headsets will be able to hold meetings as the avatar versions of themselves. The recent test program has been conducted as a number of people continue to work from home due to the extended pandemic across the globe.

Facebook has made large investments towards the virtual as well as augmented reality developing hardware like the Oculus VR Headsets. It is also working on AR headsets, wearable technologies like the wrist bands and also a range of VR gaming studios. With its various ventures, Facebook surely aims towards being the next big computing platform and be less reliant on other hardware makers.
