Google proceeds towards new augmented reality device and operating system

A number of gadget enthusiasts might have forgotten that Google was actually one of the first biggies to enter in to the augmented reality research and devices. But in recent times, the company took a passive approach towards AR despite the fact that Apple and Facebook have invested heavily in the sector. But now it seems like the trend would reverse. Operating system engineering director Mark Lucovsky has announced on LinkedIn that he has joined Google.

He has earlier headed operating system work for Meta and before that he was also one of the important architects of the Windows NT at Microsoft. Lucovsky wrote that his role is to lead the team of the Operating System for Augmented Reality at Google. He has also gone ahead by posting a few job listings which has indicated that Google is at the moment getting serious about Augmented Reality just as Apple and Meta. One of the listings include Senior Software Developer, Embedded, Augmented Reality OS. The other job listings have mentioned that the new employees will be working on the innovative AR device.

Another has specified that the search engine giant is focusing on making immersive computing experience available for millions of people with the help of mobile phones. The roles that have been listed are largely in the United States while some are located in Waterloo, Ontario which is the headquarters of Canadian smart glasses maker North. It was acquired by Google in 2020.

The search engine is offering Application programming interface and tools that will help the AR developers build experience for Android. Meanwhile, the company continues to offer the Google Glass headset that runs on Android for the enterprise customers. With the above information, it is clearly indicated that some of the big giants have high hopes with Augmented Reality. Mark Zuckerberg and Tim Cook have both described AR as the next big computing platform after smartphones.
