US-based technology giant Apple Inc. has dropped the prices on its coveted MacBook Pro laptop series on February 14, 2013. Apple has slashed the prices on those models that have the Retina display feature. They have also boosted processor speeds along with the price drop.
In terms of processor speed, the 2.5 gigahertz variants were boosted to 2.6 gigahertz for the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display, whereas the 15-inch version’s clock speed was boosted from 2.3 gigahertz to 2.4 gigahertz.
The 13-inch laptop would now be USD 200 cheaper than before, retailing at USD 1,4999, whereas the 15-inch device would be cheaper by USD 300. This means that the larger MacBook Pro with Retina display would cost USD 1,699 as of now. The high-end MacBook Air also received a price cut, falling to USD 1,399, which is USD 100 cheaper than it was earlier.
Apple is being faced with a difficult situation of cannibalism, where its iPad is cutting into sales from its other devices. Moreover, the iPad Mini is also cutting into the regular iPad earnings as well. This inter-product competition could be a double-edged sword for the technology company. Apple would be hoping to strike a balance between its various products so that they stop eating into each other’s market share and boost the company’s growth overall.
