Amazon not planning to release free phone

Online retailing giant Amazon has been in the news for reportedly working on a smartphone of its own for many years. However, the retailer recently clarified that they are not launching any phone yet and that if at all there is one, then it is not going to be free.

Amazon is known for keeping its prices low, but does not intend to keep them so low. Latest report has said that the company might offer a new phone for free, whether or not users sign up for a new wireless plan at the same time. However, these reports were denied by the Amazon spokesperson Drew Herdener on September 9, 2013. Herdener in an email said, “We have no plans to offer a phone this year, and if we were to launch a phone in the future, it would not be free”.

Even then, there were reports suggesting that the company might be using the same strategy to launch phones like it did to launch tablets a few years back. Amazon sold the devices at cost and made money on the content which users buy with their devices.

Later in 2013, the online retailer is expected to refresh its line of Kindle Fire tablets.
