LG to begin manufacturing flexible displays for smartphones

South Korean electronics manufacturing giant LG Electronics said that it will begin manufacturing flexible OLED display for smartphone use. In order to do so, panels will be built using plastic instead of glass, which will enable them to bend, but not break during usage.

Dr. Sang Deog Yeo, the chief technology officer of LG display said that the first devices which will be featuring the flexible OLED panels are expected to arrive in 2014. Yeo said, “The flexible display market is expected to grow quickly as this technology is expected to expand further into diverse applications including automotive displays, tablets and wearable devices”.

The competition in the smartphone market is severely dominated by giants like Samsung, Apple and Google and the new, flexible display could be a big breakthrough for LG, which might give the company some advantage over the three biggest players in the market. Samsung at the International Consumer Electronics Show in January 2013 revealed its own flexible OLED display, known as Youm.

A prototype device was shown during demonstration, with a screen which wrapped around the side and featured messages. Research firm IHS predicted that the flexible market has a potential to grow quickly by 2020.
