Highways Agency to introduce new speed cameras in UK

New speed cameras will soon be introduced by the Highways Agency along hundreds of miles of the UK motorway. These latest measures have been taken for the first time in an attempt to catch road users who go above the maximum speed of 70 mph.

The new devices will help in preventing traffic jams and will also enable a better traffic flow on the M1, M6 and M25, among others. On the other hand, arguments have been raised about this action being a revenue-generating exercise, as the new cameras are grey instead of yellow. A spokesperson from the Highways Agency said, “These are not stealth cameras, they are more visible than they were before”.

Brake – the road safety charity – spoke out and supported the latest move to implement new cameras. Julie Townsend, the deputy chief executive pointed out that the devices have been proven to improve safety, in addition to reducing death rates and injury where they are installed.

This might be a good decision for motorbike users, as they are less visible when many other road users are speeding. The move was made in order to put an end to the problem of constant traffic jams and to also keep a watch on speeding drivers.
