Sony sells 5.3 million PlayStation 4 consoles since launch

The maker of the popular gaming console, Sony Computer Entertainment said on February 18, 2014 that it has sold more around 5.3 million PlayStation 4 consoles across the globe as of February 8, 2014. The recent figures are strengthening the company’s position in front of rival Microsoft’s Xbox One.

The market research company NPD Group announced that the PS4 was the top-selling console in the US market. The announcement came following reports that Sony sold more than 4.2 million PS4 consoles as of December 28, 2013, after the next-gen console was launched in November 2013. Microsoft informed that it sold 3.9 million Xbox One consoles all over the world as of December 31, 2013.

The PlayStation 4 has not been launched in its home territory yet, but is now all set to be released on February 22, 2014 in Japan. The news comes as a refreshment for the company, which stated in January 2014 that it was expecting a net loss of ¥110 billion for the year to March 2014.

Meanwhile, Sony is all set to sell its surviving Vaio PC business to a Japan-based investment firm and is also planning to restructure its TV unit which is experiencing losses in recent times.
