Google to bring Android platform to wearable devices

American tech giant Google stated that it will be introducing Android platform to wearable devices, as other major players in the market – such as LG and Motorola – have already started the countdown to watches that are based on the dominant platform for smartphones. The company’s latest move will enable developers to create various apps for smartwatches and this is the first phase of the upcoming Android Wear platform.

Sundar Pichai, Google’s Android chief wrote a blog post on March 18, 2014 and said, “We’ve barely scratched the surface of what’s possible with mobile technology. That’s why we’re so excited about wearables — they understand the context of the world around you, and you can interact with them simply and efficiently, with just a glance or a spoken word.”

The latest news from the tech giant comes at a time when there is an increased interest in wearable electronics which are able to connect to smartphones and following the release of a couple of smart watches by both big and small manufacturers. Meanwhile, LG Electronics announced on March 18, 2014 in Seoul that it will release its first Internet-enabled smartwatch – which is powered by Google’s new operating system – by the end of June 2014.

Motorola also made a similar announcement, stating that it will launch its own smartwatch during summer 2014 in the United States.
