Yahoo withdraws support for Do Not Track technology

Internet giant Yahoo was one of the first companies to acknowledge the ‘Do Not Track’ header from various browsers on its properties. However, it has been reported that the American company will not be supporting DNT any longer. Officials from Yahoo said that the lack of an industry standard for Do Not Track is one of the reasons for this decision.

Do Not Track is an option in the biggest browsers which enables users to tell websites that they do not want their activities to be tracked as they surf online. In that case, a browser sends a header to different sites informing them about the preference of users. After that, sites can opt to respect that or disregard the header, but sites of Yahoo will be ignoring it from now on.

An official from Yahoo in an unsigned post said, “As of today, web browser Do Not Track settings will no longer be enabled on Yahoo. As the first major tech company to implement Do Not Track, we’ve been at the heart of conversations surrounding how to develop the most user-friendly standard.’’ The official went on to say that they have to see a single standard to appear which is effective, as well as easy to use and has been accepted by the tech industry.

Many questions have been raised regarding the security and privacy community about the DNT’s usefulness as a privacy technology.
