Google is gearing up to test a high-speed ‘Fiber’ internet service, that may provide the foundation for completely wireless internet service. The news came after Google filed an application with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on Monday. In the application, Google seeks permission from the FCC to conduct tests in California.
The company is planning on utilizing different wireless spectrums including a rarely used millimeter-wave frequency that can transfer large volumes of data fairly quickly. The technology being tested may form the basis for beaming internet connections to homes directly, eliminating the use of wires (Yes, routers provide wireless internet, but the router itself needs to be connected with an ethernet cable).
The American home internet industry is currently dominated by a few network providers like Comcast, Verizon and AT&T. If this technology works out, then it could change the entire power equation. The technology being tested is much cheaper and faster than the internet already available and this might prove to be a major threat to the existing companies.
Stephen Crowley, a wireless engineer and consultant said, “You could look at it as a possible wireless extension of their Google Fiber wireless network, as a way to more economically serve homes. Put up a pole in a neighborhood, instead of having to run fiber to each home.”
This wireless internet connection is a build up on the Google’s already existing “Fiber” internet connection.
