Image sharing service for Twitter that was launched in 2008 is now shutting down over a trademark issue with Twitter. Good news for users is that Twitter will be hosting the images for the time being and all 800m photos that were uploaded since 2008 will be accessible by users. The photo sharing service will hand over the domain and all the photos to Twitter who will keep an archive of the photo database.
TwitPic was launched in 2008 as a site where Twitter users could share images with others before the image functionality was introduced in the service itself. The links that were shared will still remain active, Twitter promises. In an emotional blog post, the founder of TwitPic, Noah Everett said, “We weren’t able to find a way to keep Twitpic independent.”
Early in September 2014, TwitPic had announced that they would be shutting down their service on September 25, 2014. However, the company went back and changed their stance a few days later as they announced that the service would continue as it was bought by an unnamed buyer.
Following that announcement, the company issued a final statement this month that it would officially shut down on October 25, 2014. The service said it did not have the resources to fight the giant Twitter in court and bowed down to the pressure that was being put.
