Photo sharing site Instagram is one of the most popular social networking sites. The social network recently issued an apology after it accidentally rolled out a new update that had made some major changes in the main feed of the app. The users instead of scrolling up and down to view the content were forced to tap left or right that utilized a horizontal Stories-like approach.
The company had earlier tested the design in October, 2018 exclusively on the Explore Page. Adam Mosseri, the newly appointed head of Instagram explained, “supposed to be a very small test that went broad by accident. Should be fixed now. If you’re still seeing it simply restart the app. Happy holidays! ?” Later an official Tweet came from the Official Instagram account that read, “Due to a bug, some users saw a change to the way their feed appears today. We quickly fixed the issue and feed is back to normal.”
The update has now been amended. When the new accidental update was applied, the new posts took up the entire screen as it did with the advertisements and the only way that was left for the users was to tap right or left opposite to the earlier traditional vertical scrolling. The old version was still available through Instagram.com, however, allowed the users to scroll up and down in addition to the Explore Page on the app. After the major change noticed by the users, many of them expressed their opinions on Twitter. Apart from the criticism, many of them even appreciated for the quick fix that Instagram had.
Facebook-owned Instagram has more than one billion monthly active users and is the most popular app for those who want to instantly share photographic content. The update might have been accidental, but the immediate turnover was appreciated by many of the users who are obsessed by the app.
