South Korean giant Samsung is working towards a new device that will make the entire front portion of its phone a screen with no need for bezels or a camera cutout of any kind. On the other hand, Yang Byung-duk, the vice president of its display R&D group said that though it would not be possible to make a full screen smartphone in the next one to two years , the technology can move forward to a point where the camera hole can be invisible while not affecting the camera’s function in any way.
The comments have come in less than a month after the south Korean giant had announced that its latest flagship, the Galaxy S10. The S10 is the company’s first phone to have a hole punch cut out from its display for the selfie camera. The Infinity-O display was called as a milestone by Yang for the company but suggested that Samsung eventually plans to place the selfie camera under the display itself while removing the need for any cutout or pop-up mechanism.
This is not the first time Samsung has talked about its plans to produce all all-display device. Samsung in a presentation given in 2018 said that it was working on four interrelated technologies to maximize screen sizes, under-display fingerprint scanners , haptic display technologies, under panel camera sensors and in-display speakers similar to the LG’s G8 vibrating OLED screen. Despite the ambition of Samsung, it has become a rare phenomenon for Samsung to come out as the first to be in the market with new technologies like these.
Many Chinese-made phones had included in-display fingerprint sensors before the feature was made available to Samsung’s flagship. Honor’s View 20 was the first phone to feature a hole-punch display but Yang has noted that the S10 was the first to do it with an OLED panel. Vivo along with other Chinese handsets have also made full-screen devices by moving the cameras around back.
