Snapchat is a popular multi-media instant messaging app and is used globally. Parent company Snapchat Inc. is planning to announce its gaming platform for the developers in April 2019. The news was reported by online news service Cheddar on March 15, 2019 while citing a person familiar with the matter. The shares of the company rose to nearly 3 percent in trading before the bell.
The new gaming platform for now has been codenamed as Project Cognac and will feature a handful of games from outside the developer’s design to work specifically in the SnapChat App. Reports say that the new gaming initiative will be unveiled at the Snap’s maiden summit for content and developer partners in Los Angeles to be held on April 4, 2019. The event will also seen announcements of video initiatives like more original shows.
Snapchat’s plan on the gaming platform was first reported by the technology news website known as The Information in June 2018. The company had then declined to comment on the project. Snap Inc’s Snapchat was first launched in March 2017 and has been popular among the users but it faced its own struggles since its inception. The application is known for its disappearing messages and funny filters. Facebook-owned photo sharing app Instagram has replicated many of its novel features.
The company had in 2018 introduced a controversial redesign for the app but was not received well by the Snapchat users and advertisers. The application was created by Evan Spiegel, Bobby Murphy and Reggie Brown, who were former students of Stanford University. One of the important feature of the app is that messages and pictures are usually only available for a short time and they become inaccessible to their recipients. Snapchat had become notable for representing new mobile first direction for social media and had placed a significant emphasis on the users while interacting with virtual stickers.
