Microsoft has started setting out signals that it is soon going to take off support from its popular operating system Windows 7. The Operating system was released by Microsoft in October 2009 and it came in less than three years after the company had launched Windows Vista. The Windows 7 was primarily intended to address the poor reception of Vista among the users. Microsoft will be end support for Windows 7 on January 14, 2020.
Alerts are now being sent to the users and the company recommends them to upgrade to Windows 10. Windows will officially reach the end of support on January 14, 2020 and Microsoft will no longer offer free security updates and technical support for the operating system. It was reported in march, 2019 that in order to notify the users of the impending date, Microsoft has started pushing the KB4493132 update that will be used to display alerts starting from April 18, 2019 and running through January 15, 2020.
When it is installed the update will extract an executable with the name C:\Windows\System32\sipnotify.exe which is launched by a scheduled task every day. When the executable is launched in the time periods mentioned it will display the alert to warn the users about the upcoming end of support. The text of the alert warns the users that they will no longer receive security updates and technical support starting on January 14, 2020. It will then provide a link to learn more about what to do. The text in the warning says, January 14, 2020 is the last day Microsoft will offer security updates and technical support for computers running Windows 7. We Known can be difficult, that’s why we’re reaching out early to help you back up your files and prepare for what’s next.
The company has also provided support on how to back up the data. Users who do not wish to see the alert can click on Do Not Remind Me Again checkbox.
