Search engine giant Google is all set t shut down its Jump VR platform. The 360 degree camera software will go offline by the end of June, 2019. The software company has already started telling its users to download their data before it shuts down completely. The Jump was launched by Google in 2015 with an intension to simplify the creation of 3D 360-degree videos using shots and videos that are captured by compatible camera rigs. They are typically composed of over a dozen action cameras.
Once they are uploaded, Google uses the power of the cloud to automatically stitch them together. An email has been sent to the users and a notice has been posted at the top of the Jump FAQ page. Google has also said that it will stop accepting uploads for processing at 11:59 PM Pacific on June 26, 2019. People who want to copy the data that they have uploaded have time till June 27, 2019. On June 28, 2019 the search engine will start erasing the cloud data from Jump and will also star deactivating accounts.
The email to the users said, “ Dear Jump Creator, We create Jump in 2015 to push the virtual reality content creation forward. Over the last three years filmmaker around the world have used Jump to create some of the most innovative and creative immersive videos ever made. During that time we have seen the emergence of a number of good alternative solutions for creators including VR180. As these new cameras, formats and editing tools became available, we saw usage of Jump Assembler decline. Therefore we will be ending.”
Based on what the company has told the users, the declining userbase compelled the company to shut the service. However, the camera rigs that support Jump like the GoPro Odyssey and the Yi Halo will continue to work with third party video editing software.
