In May, 2019, search engine giant Google had promised to pay $7.25 million to settle a class action lawsuit by Pixel owners for selling phones with a defect. The defect had lead to microphones or speaker failures. A report from a leading daily has mentioned that the final approval from the United States Court for the Northern District of California has arrived.
The latest development means that people who had purchased the Pixel or the Pixel XL smartphone manufactured before January 4, 2017 can now submit a claim to receive up to $500 from the company. The surprise here is that Pixel and Pixel XL owners who did not face any issues with the microphone will also be paid up to $20 by Google. Moreover, if the Pixel and Pixel XL owner experienced mic issues but do not have any documentation to prove the same, will still be paid up to $20.
Meanwhile, if the purchaser has the documents to prove that they ran in to the issue they will be paid $350 by Google. Individuals who experienced the issue on many devices will be eligible to receive $500. The search engine will also give a refund to people who paid an insurance deductible to get a replacement device.
But there is a deadline for the claims and the Pixel and the Pixel XL owners need to submit the claims on or before October 7, 2019. But if the users are planning to submit a standard claim then they have to do it as soon as possible. This is because only 25 percent of the total settlement fund of $7.25 million has been set aside for standard claims. So if a larger number of people submit a standard claim, then the payouts will be distributed. A hearing is expected to be held in court on December 6, 2019 to decide if the settlements have been approved.
