Samsung to stop LCD production by end of 2020

South Korean giant Samsung is all set to put an end to the production of its liquid crystal display also known as LCD panels in China as well as South Korea by the end of 2020. The announcement was made by a spokeswoman from Samsung on March 31, 2020. However, Samsung Display had in October, 2019 announced that it has shut down the production lines of two of its LCD manufacturing units due to falling demand and supply difficulties. Samsung Display is a unit of Samsung Electronics Co Ltd.

The company in a statement said that it will be supplying the LCD that were ordered by its customers by the end of 2020. On the other hand the Apple Inc supplier in October, 2019 said that it will be investing about 13.1 trillion won for the facilities and research that will help to upgrade the production line. The investment promise was made amidst the poor demand for smartphones and TVs that is faced globally.

In the next five years, Samsung will be focusing on converting one of its manufacturing units in South Korea in to a unit that will be able to mass produce advanced “quantum dot” screens. At present Samsung has two production units in South Korea and two production units in China. All the four units produce LCD panels and the company will be upgrading the manufacturing units for future demands of better and advanced screens.

However, the company is yet to decide the future of such manufacturing units that are in China. Upgradation process is also  followed by other companies. Samsung rival LG has earlier in 2020 announced that it will be suspending the local production of LCD TV panels by the end of 2020. Tech giants these days are looking forward to adopt better technology in terms of screens and LCD screens are hardly used in devices anymore. The decision by Samsung does not come as a surprise.
