Sony shutting down PlayStation Communities in April

Tech giant Sony is all set to discontinue its PlayStation Communities feature. The announcement was made in an email that was sent to the owners of PlayStation 4. The email said that the PlayStation Communities will be shutting down in April 2021. PlayStation Communities is a service that had allowed the users of PlayStation 4 to create groups that allowed discussion on various topics and games.

The group members had used the communities to find members that had common interests. The members also posted messages and organized gaming sessions. It was in March 2020 when the company had shut down the PlayStation Communities mobile app which had allowed the social aspects of the service. However, this is not the first time the removal of the service has been reported. The current 8.5 update beta was accompanied by a few patch notes that had mentioned that the PlayStation Communities service would be removed.

This can be a hint that the 8.5 update could be launched in April 2021 but still the fact cannot be ignored that Sony can take back the service before the actual update is rolled out and will remove the feature from the PlayStation 4 UI. So far Sony has not announced about any other service as a replacement on the PlayStation 4. But the PlayStation 5 has a few features that act as the same functions like the PlayStation Communities service.

Some of the features of the service include game hubs with community content, group multiplayer launch, screen sharing along with multi-tasking and Game Base gathering space. The company is yet to make an official announcement in terms of the date in April, 2021. This also works as a warning for gamers to disassemble themselves from any communities that they are a part of. The feature was added to the PlayStation 4 with the 3.00 update that was released in September 2015.
