Apple launches self-service repair program

Cupertino based giant Apple has launched its new self-service repair program that will allow the customers to purchase original components by Apple that could be used to repair the broken parts. This means that the customers would be able to repair their own devices. The new move has been taken by Apple in an attempt to bring down the repair costs of the iPhone and Macs. It would also help to extend the lifecycle of the consumer electronics.

For the beginning, the service will first be available in the United States starting from early in 2022 for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 ranges. Some of the common issues that arise in smartphones include screen, battery and camera related issues. Under the program, the customers would be able to repair and replace the worn out or broken parts. The service is expected to be rolled out in other markets through 2022 and is also expected to cover Mac Computers with M1 chips. With the launch announcement, Apple did not disclose as to how the components would be priced.

The recent move is contradictory with reference to its fight about a shareholder proposal last month about proposal in right to repair. The iPhone giant had then said that its own experts were the best ones to service its products. The recent move has been taken after the executive order by the Biden administration that demands address of the unfair anti-competitive restrictions on the third party repair or the self-repair of the items.

The move is seen as remarkable and has shown that it can encourage people to have the spare parts, as it is something that the company has refrained from doing since a long time. Apple has been the target of the consumer protection bodies for constantly guarding its monopoly when it came to the repair process. Its policies were so strict that the iPhones would cease to function even if two of the identical models have their parts swapped.
