Tesco to end sale of CDs and DVDs

British retailer Tesco is all set to end the sale of CDs and DVDs in its stores. An official announcement is yet to be made but people familiar with the progress have informed. More reports have said that Tesco will hereafter not receive any new stock of physical media. The company will sell off or remain any remaining products by the end of February 2022.

People familiar with the progress further informed that they would be reducing the general merchandise entertainment along with toy and electrical ranges. The internal memo has specified the reference towards the removal of CDs and DVDs. The recent news has surfaced after Sainsbury’s had in 2021 announced the same about physical media and the 2021 festive period had marked the final push where people would be able to grab the DVDs and CDs along with Bluerays.

However, talking about the decision by Tesco, no specific mention has been made about Blu-ray discs but it is likely that these will also be a part of the mass removal of the physical media from its stores. With the recent decision by Tesco it could mark an end of the physical media products like the DVDs and CDs. Meanwhile, it has to be noticed that HMV and Amazon continue to remain committed towards physical media despite a major shift of the world towards digital streaming. It could be possible that the move by Tesco could force the consumers to shop for their needs from somewhere else.

With a massive change towards the digital world, the importance of CDs and DVDs is diminishing everyday. In 2021 just 300 million CDs and DVDs were sold across the globe which is down from an average of 2 billion in a year. But still the 4K and the Ultra HD DVD content continues to remain a lucrative and an attractive catch for fans in 2022. This is also a time when TV display tech is improving with every launch.
