Online services these days have made it easy for the internet users to sign up for a particular service by paying a subscription fee. The monthly fee is then deducted automatically every month from the user’s account and many times the users forget about it. Microsoft is now taking a few steps to deal with the situation with its inactive Game Pass memberships. The software giant has said that it will be cancelling the subscriptions of the accounts that have remained dormant for a long time. The steps that are being taken are a part of the changes to the Xbox Live Gold and Game Pass in the United Kingdom.
Microsoft is planning to get in touch with the people who have Xbox Live Gold or Game Pass accounts but have not used it since at least a year. Microsoft will be guiding the users on how to stop their payments if they wish to opt out of the service. Moreover, people who have been paying for the subscriptions but have not used their memberships for 12 consecutive months, will no longer have to pay the company the subscription fees. For now the changes would be applied for the subscribers in the United Kingdom.
The company has assured that the feature would be rolled out across the globe in near future. The fresh measure has been announced after the company had promised for it since the past three years in the United Kingdom. It is also a part of the company’s agreement with the Competition and Market’s Authority in UK. The agency has been closely watching the auto-renew subscription systems with PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and Xbox since 2019. On the other hand no similar commitments have been made by Nintendo or Sony.
Apart from the dormant subscriptions, the company has also assured that it would provide with better information about subscriptions with clear information on auto-renewal. The company will also offer the users a chance to cancel and receive a refund on subscriptions.
