Google to launch a darker mode

Search engine giant Google has started to roll out the pitch-black dark mode for its home page. The dark mode that was earlier rolled out had a lighter tone with a hint of grey and was soothing for the eyes, but now the search engine has switched to a pitch black mode. This mode is expected to be noticeably visible in AMOLED and OLED displays.

Google had announced about a wide-spread availability of the dark mode earlier in February 2022. But since then the roll-out has been slow. A few people already have it and a leading daily has reported that some of the users got the new theme but have eventually lost it. The search engine said that it was under the process of testing a new dark mode in February 2021 and then announced that the new theme would be available on Desktop and mobile. The new theme that has now showed up continues to be dark, but this time it has a darker theme on Google App and Google search in Safari.

The different between the pitch-black background and the gray front makes the change appear starker. The dark gray background is a preferable color as it does not have much contrast. People who are now continuing to use the lighter mode and wish to have the darker mode can now make the changes through the settings. The user has to just select the gear icon on the top right corner and open the quick settings. Select the dark mode and you are good to go.

The fresh display could be a good option for those whose dark mode was not dark enough. It can also be a good option for the users who would like to save battery life on the devices with OLED displays. But still it is not clear as to how much battery life the user could end up saving. For now it cannot be said as the new stark visual difference would be worth the change.
