Chinese tech giant HTC had sold off majority of its smartphone segment in 2018 to Google. But the company has not completely taken off its hands from the market. Nearly a year back, the Desire 21 Pro 5G was released as a mid-range smartphone and now the company wishes to make a new flagship smartphone. HTC had spoken to a leading daily at the Mobile World Congress 2022 and had then spoken about launching a high-end smartphone in April, 2022.
HTC had launched its last flagship smartphone known as the Exodus 1 in December 2018. The smartphone was known for its cryptocurrency friendly abilities and could maintain a local crypto wallet. The device was a little modified version of the HTC U12+ that was released in 2018. But ever since then the company has launched only budget and mid-range smartphones and majority of them were sold only in its home country Taiwan. Now HTC is likely to introduce a few big changes and could also integrate some of the metaverse functions in the upcoming smartphone.
People unaware about metaverse could define it as a combination of virtual reality and augmented reality technologies that relate to some level of interaction with people with the help of an online simulated environment. HTC was once a leader in terms of virtual reality as it possessed the Vive headsets, but it is still not clear as to how that could relate to a smartphone. Meanwhile, search engine giant Google also took back its Daydream VR environment to focus on smartphones with the launch of Android 11.
This means if HTC wanted to build a smartphone with the VR component it will have to put in a lot of efforts. It is also not clear, if the upcoming smartphone will be launched outside Taiwan.
There is also a possibility that the new smartphone might not have anything to do with VR or AR and the company is just hoping that more attention could be brought for its products.
