New USB-C rules in European Union might force Apple have new ports for its iPhones

The European Union Lawmakers have agreed to implement on a few new proposals that includes to force the manufacturers of smartphones and other gadgets to include the same universal charging port – USB Type-C or USB-C. As of now the lawmakers are planning to implement the new rules from fall 2024, which would mean that all the standard gadgets like smartphones, headphones, tablets and cameras should be compatible with the standard USB Type S charging.

While a number of smartphone makers have already adopted the USB-C ports for their respective devices, one of the biggest company is likely to have a big impact. Apple’s iPhone has been featuring the Lightening connector ever since it was launched for the iPhone 5 in 2012. Since then it has never considered to Switch to USB-C. The new legislation by the European Union might force the Cupertino based giant to add USB-C ports to its iPhones. For now the EU rules would remain provisional and will still need an approval from the European Council and the European Parliament. The approval might come in the month of September and would come to force 20 days after the approval.

After the approval, the manufacturers will have 24 months to comply with the laws which is likely to be during fall 2024. Here the laptops would be considered as an exception as these devices require high-voltage than the USB-C chargers. The laptop manufacturers would have 40 months to comply with the rules.

This means that if Apple would want to sell its iPhones in the European Union in 2024, then it will have to include UCB-C ports for its devices. Moreover, it will not have the option to offer an external dongle like it had tried nearly ten years back. The new guidelines by the EU are focusing to reduce e-waste. The usage of USB-C chargers would mean that more chargers could be reused instead of landing in the landfills.
