Finnish company Nokia is making a comeback in the electronics market with a new tablet N1, that they unveiled today, November 18, 2014. The launch was met by surprise from most people, who had no clue what the ailing company was up to. Nokia recently sold its mobile business to giant Microsoft in April 2014.
A week ago, Microsoft launched its first Lumia phone that did not carry the Nokia brand. In what seems like a response to that, Nokia has launched the N1, which will be running Google’s Android Lollipop. This is the first time that a Nokia device has ditched Microsoft’s Windows platform since 2011, when the company formed a strategic deal with Microsoft. The tablet will also have Nokia’s Z launcher running on it.
Product Business Head at Nokia Technologies, Sebastian Nystrom said that he was “pleased to bring the Nokia brand back into consumers’ hands.” Only 2.5% mobile users use Windows compared to the 80% that use Android. This will give Nokia access to a higher percentage of the population.
