Twitter updates search index

Microblogging site Twitter has updates its search index, now users can search for tweets from 2006.

Popular microblogging site Twitter has tweaked its search index now, which will enable users to search for public tweets from all the way back to 2006. While the site has always been basing its conversations on the current world happenings, this move is set to change that framework that it operated within. What used to happen earlier, a tweet that was posted more than a week ago would be omitted from Twitter’s search index.

This was done to make the conversations more relevant and more up to date. Twitter made the announcement through an official blog post. While there are third-party solutions to search for older tweets, like TwimeMachine and Topsy, this is the first time that Twitter itself has incorporated the feature. The first tweet on Twitter was posted by the founder Jack Dorsey, who said, “just setting up my twttr.”

The search engine is very basic and will still use hashtags and keywords to bring up search results that are required by a user. Incidentally, Twitter did not have its own search engine till 2011, which was 5 years after it was founded. The feature will begin rolling out to customers on the iOS and Android mobile applications.

Getting the whole index together was a hard task, but Twitter has managed it quite well.
