Jolla raises $892,000 for Sailfish tablet

Finnish startup Jolla raises $892 million for Sailfish tablet on crowdfunding website Indiegogo.

The first crowdfunded tablet to be made is Jolla’s Sailfish powered tablet. The Finnish startup, started by ex-Nokia engineers, had pledged $380,000 on crowdfunding website Indiegogo. The campaign was started on November 19, 2014 and within a few hours, fans of the company pledged more than $800,000 for the product.

The campaign was set up for a 3 week period, within which they needed to generate the the required funds. However, Jolla managed to raise more than twice the amount they had initially asked for. Jolla already has one mobile phone on the market with limited availability in India, EU, Norway, Kazakkstan, Russia, Hong Kong and Switzerland. The phone also runs the open source Sailfish 2.0 OS.

These are the specs of the Jolla tablet:

  • Operating software: Sailfish OS
  • CPU: 64-bit 1.8 GHz
  • Number of cores: Quad-core Intel
  • RAM: 2 GB
  • Internal memory: 32 GB, expandable with a MicroSD card
  • Display: 7.85 inches
  • Resolution: 2048 x 1536
  • Camera: Primary – 5 megapixel; Secondary – 2 megapixel
  • Battery: 4200 mAh
  • Connectivity: Only Wi-Fi

The tablet will be available from May 2015 and will come at a price of $189. The biggest USP of the device is its operating software. The Sailfish is a derived from the Linux-based software. It is an open source, which gives users the opportunity to change whatever they want or don’t want. It will have its own Application Programming Interface (API), but will also run some Android applications.
