In the latest cyber security breach, a group of cyber criminals threaten to leak several snapchat photos on the web.
There are at least 100,000 private Snapchat photos that might be leaked onto the internet by a group of cyber criminals. The group claims that they have access to thousands of snapchat photos that they will be leaking into a searchable database. Given the explicit nature of the application, experts predict that a lot of the pictures might be compromising.
The thing that concerns most people is that most of Snapchat’s users are teens between the ages of 13-17. Leaking nude pictures of these teens would amount to child pornography. This controversy has already been given a name in social circles – The Snappening. The name comes from ‘The Fappening’, which was the controversy where nude pictures of Hollywood celebrities were leaked online, following a hack of Apple’s iCloud.
The threat was posted on website 4Chan, along with a blurred screengrab of what appears to be the database of photos. The leaked photos will be searchable by the Snapchat ID of the person, which makes matters worse. Snapchat responded to these claims in a tweet that read, “We can confirm that Snapchat’s servers were never breached and were not the source of these leaks.”
There are already some known third-party applications that allow people to save snapchat photos, without letting the sender know that they are doing so. The Snapchat application has about 30 million users that send around 700 million images each day.
