Norwegian software company Opera has confirmed about its venture in to the game division. The company has announced that it has purchased YoYo Games who has created GameMaker Studio. The announcement added that the deal will be the foundation of a new video game division that will be called as Opera Gaming. The previous owner of YoYo Games, Playtech revealed that it had sold the company for $10 million earlier this week but had then refused to name the buyer. But now the software company has confirmed the purchase.
Opera issued a statement that mentioned that the recent deal has marked the second step towards Opera Gaming. The first step was the creation of the gaming browser Opera GX. Not many are aware that such a gaming browser exists and was launched in 2019. It has been designed to attract the gamers and has some attractive background music, sound effects and a neon design.
Opera has expressed that it has hopes with the recent integration of Opera GX with YoYo Games. The company is looking forward to make it more accessible to the new users and aims to make it the world’s leading 2D game engine that could be used by commercial studios as well. Krystian Kolondra, the EVP Browsers at Opera in a press release said that Opera Gaming will be focusing towards the growth of the new gaming trend and will be looking forward to combine nearly 7 million highly engaged gamers who use the Opera GX with the creators of GameMaker.
Kolondra added that they are looking forward to work with the team at YoYo Games. The press release added that they look at the recent acquisition of Game Maker Studio as an ideal platform to realize their global ambitions. They are also looking forward to increase the awareness of the new platform and encourage more traffic to the Opera GX gaming browser.
