Google unveils smart contact lens featuring camera

Search engine giant Google has come up with a new smart contact lens which will have an integrated camera. The camera featured in the lens will be very small and will be placed close to the edge of the contact lens in an effort not to interfere with user’s vision.

The camera will follow user’s gaze while it is working and will enable a number of amazing applications. The best part of the device is that it has the ability to become a bionic eye system for blind, as well as visually impaired people with the help of early warning systems. In addition to that, Google Glass has become publicly available in the US for a day on April 15, 2014 and is priced at $1,500.

The upcoming smart contact lens has a small CMOS camera sensor which is placed just below the pupil. An imaging sensor has to absorb light and it will not be transparent, but there is a possibility it can be color matched to user’s iris, so that user’s eyes do not look strange.

In terms of its possible uses, the contact lens can also become a device for the police who could spot suspicious faces in the crowd or even a concealed weapon. There are still some concerns about space for battery and whether a wireless device can be placed in a sensitive organ.
