Following its successful venture into the tablet market, there is a possibility that the online retail giant Amazon will venture into the video game console segment in the near future. The company has recently acquired Double Helix Games – the California-based gaming studio – however, details of that deal have not been revealed so far.
Double Helix Games is known for creating the popular game ‘Killer Instinct’, which was one of the first titles to become available at the time of Microsoft’s Xbox One launch. The online retail giant confirmed some of the earlier rumors that it acquired Double Helix and explained that it is working on building innovative games for customers.
So far, no formal announcement has been made by either of the two companies. On the other hand, journalists have already received an invitation for an Amazon and Double Helix event, which has been scheduled for February 13, 2014 in Los Angeles and it is expected that the deal will be finalized around that time. Reports say that Amazon was interested in the video game business for a while and acquired gaming studio Reflective Entertainment more than five years back.
In recent times, Amazon has been recruiting developers to work at its new Amazon Game Studios. Some industry experts say that the company has been developing a new game console which was supposed to be announced in 2013.
