Foldable phones is the new growing trend among the smartphone manufacturers and might be like a breathe of fresh air in the already saturated sea of smartphone market. After Samsung, Royole, Huawei, Oppo, Motorola, LG and Xiaomi, search engine giant Google might be the next to join the list to make a foldable device. Some of the patents filed by the search engine have hinted about the variety of rough designs for how a foldable device could work with handsets folding in different ways.
The sketches are very early and do not have a huge amount of detail but they do suggest what kind of foldable the company is considering. One thing is sure that every company in to the foldable race has come up with their own unique designs and Google is no way behind. The first design has showed a phone that would fold down on itself when it is not in use which is like a clamshell design when the screen is on the inside when the device is closed.
Such a form factor that is also considered by other companies, including Samsung for a Fold successor. Another design has shown a handset that can fold down in three sections and has three display surfaces that stack when folded to make one smaller device. Such a design has been observed in other patents as well, it is something a very few manufacturers seem to be considering. Most of the patents that have been posted has shown phones folding in two. At the same time, none of the designs in the patents has shown a revolutionary new form of flexible screen that other companies haven’t considered.
It is also interesting that there is no sign of a notebook type foldable like the Galaxy Fold or the Huawei Mate X. For now only Samsung and Huawei have foldable devices which are ready to hit the market soon.
